Play Jazz! Workshops

A new series of workshops focusing on jazz improvisation & playing in small groups.

Where?
Sage Gateshead, St Mary’s Square, Gateshead NE8 2JR

When?
2–6 pm on the first Saturday of each month, starting 1 February 2014

Do I have to come to them all?
You don’t have to but you may want to.  This is not a course; each workshop is self-contained.  But each workshop will have a different theme that forms part of a common thread.

What happens at the workshops?

You will work in a small group led by an experienced jazz musician.  You’ll learn a bit of theory but mostly it will be very practical – lots of listening and playing.  You’ll have the opportunity to improvise and interact with other musicians in an informal supportive situation.

Can anyone attend?
You should be able to play all the notes on your instrument with ease and pianists/guitarists should be able to play standard chords.  It is not essential to read music although this might be useful.  The workshops are designed for instrumentalist but vocalists who want to improvise with their voice would be welcome.  The minimum age is 16; there’s no maximum age.

Is it for me?
The workshops should appeal to all sorts of musicians including those who:

  • play other styles of music but are new to jazz
  • play written music but want to learn to improvise
  • have not played for a while and want to refresh their skills
  • want to meet and play with other jazz musicians.

Who is running this?
The Play Jazz! workshops have been arranged by Pink Lane Jazz Co-op in association with The Sage, Gateshead. The panel of tutors includes James Birkett, Fiona Finden, Steve Glendinning, John Pope and Judith Thompson.

How do I enrol?

Enrolment is being managed by the ticket office at Sage Gateshead.  Probably the easiest way to enrol is to phone 0191 443 4661. (The ticket office is open is open Monday to Sunday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm on non show nights. On show nights it is open for 30 minutes after the start of the last performance.)

You can book via the Sage website, but this is awkward if you want to book more more than one workshop.

What does it cost?
£19.00 per workshop or £17.00 for members of Pink Lane Jazz Co-op.

How do I join the co-op?
